Five reasons to like service charges

The sector faces a lot of challenges when it comes to managing service charges effectively, but perhaps one of the greatest is the perception of service charges and its failure to attract new talent.

My excitement around service charges is often met with some rather concerned looks. It’s never been a glamorous role; you won’t hear many congratulations from residents for receiving a demand, but it’s hard to think of another role that has such a significant financial impact on whether your organisation can deliver its social purpose.

So, let’s start to shift the narrative. Here’s five reasons I think working in service charges is a fantastic choice for anyone looking to make a difference in the sector:

  1. They’re not as difficult as people make out

  2. A critical eye is more important than advanced math skills

  3. They’re great if you’re a problem solver

  4. You’ll learn a little about everything your organisation does

  5. You’re always working towards a goal
